dachstein

the hohe dachstein at 2995m is the highest peak of the dachstein mountains and also the highest peak of the federal states of upper austria and styria. to the north, at a distance of 400m, lies the niedere dachstein at 2934m. due to its height and attractiveness, the dachstein has become a coveted destination for mountaineers since the 19th century, after the grimming was long considered the highest mountain in styria. the approximately 1km high reddish south walls of dachstein limestone are also famous.
