in front of the city hall tower, the christmas tree first placed here in 1959, usually about 30 meters tall, has since formed the centerpiece of the christmas market. an attraction of the vienna christmas market is the christmas tree in front of the city hall with around 1,000 led lights. for the first time in 2015, the market opened an 'unofficial' day earlier, with november 13 as a test run, and was open two days longer, until december 26. the tree will stand until january 6, 2016. the terrorist attacks of november 13, 2015 in paris led mayor häupl to cancel the opening ceremony and illumination.
