architecturally, vienna is still primarily characterized by the buildings along the ringstraße from the gründerzeit era, but also by baroque and art nouveau. through its role as the imperial capital of the austrian empire from 1804, vienna became a cultural and political center of europe in the 19th century. as the fifth-largest city in the world, the city had over two million inhabitants around 1910. the historic center of vienna and schloss schönbrunn are now part of the unesco world heritage. with approximately seven million tourists and around 15 million overnight stays annually, vienna is one of the ten most visited cities in europe.
